GATTACA Response

In what way does GATTACA represent the elements of a dystopian society?

It represents a dystopian society because it is opposite from the present society. For instance, no one discriminates one about their gender, religion or class but on one's genes. In addition babies are not born for love, but to compete against natural selection. Also, everything is different in this society, such as you will not survive if you are not good enough. Plus, since everyone is perfect, society is still not satisfied. They want to be better, in that case it leads to a dystopian society, more than a utopian. Moving on, the main character of the story which is Vincent, and he cannot meet all the expectations of this too perfect society, and he wishes to be different.  Gattaca is also a dystopian society because every person has to be perfect in order to be accepted, and Vincent has a heart condition, which makes him face some problems. Therefore, he physically turns himself into a different man, so that he can achieve his career goals.

In what way might GATTACA be considered a representation of a utopian society?

Gattaca might be considered a utopian society because everyone thinks that it is much safer and better for everyone to be "perfect" and have the best genes. They also think there are less chances of anything going wrong. In addition, society thinks that everyone will be much happier in this type of society because, each person will be capable to do anything they want. Furthermore, parents can choose the specific type of genes they wish their child should have. Since everyone is genetically perfect, no one has diseases or sickness, each person must have a certain IQ, in order to excel in life.
